Over the many years that the Even Start Family Literacy program served Perry County, they helped hundreds of families get their GEDs and learn to read. Before closing in March of 2012, they shared this story of Susan.
Susan was a young mother who worked as a waitress. She was determined to study and obtain her GED in order to find a better paying job. When she started classes with Even Start, her self esteem was very low. She was part of the Even Start program for three years during which, she not only got her GED but went on to study nursing. She stayed in the Even Start program where she got help with her college classes. She is now a nurse at Perry County Memorial Hospital.
Sadly, Even Start had to close in Perry County due to loss of federal funding. We are very fortunate though that our partners at Perry Central Schools have taken up where Even Start left off to provide Perry County Adult Literacy program in Perry County.
We have no doubt that Perry County Adult Literacy will have many success stories like Susan's to share in the coming years.
